—Changing eye colour.

In my opinion, changing eye colour in photoshop can be done in two ways; a natural way or a more vivid, dramatic way which takes more focus and more attention to detail. Both ways are very simple and I personally think that the more vivd way is more appealing to the eye.

A natural change;

- First off, you will need to select your lasso tool. Then you can begin to trace around one of the irises (coloured part of the eye).

- Proceed to select the other eye by holding the shift key on your keyboard and then trace around the remaining iris carefully. You will need to be meticulous in doing so as we want to change the colour of both irises entirely, not just part of them.

- Usually, if the overall picture is looking very soft, I will sharpen the selected irises (Enhance > Auto sharpen or you can use the actual sharpen tool) and then I adjust Brightness/Contrast of the eyes to the best of my own judgement. This creates a nice effect and alters the appearance of the eyes immensely.

- Now you will need to decide on a colour. I will take blue as an example as that is the colour I used to change Dianna’s eyes (shown above). It is rather difficult to alter the appearance of extremely dark, brown eyes but it can be done if you pay great attention to lighting and intensity of colour.

- Select the paint brush tool and set the mode to ‘color’. You can adjust the opacity as you wish.

- Carefully fill in both irises with the brush tool, you should be able to tell once he change is complete.

—If you aren’t satisfied with your end result, I suggest you consider the following:

A dramatic change;

- You can furthermore change the eyes by using different settings of the paint brush tool.

- I suggest using a light shade of blue (or whatever other colour you wish to use), a medium-toned shade of a colour that is quite similar and then a darker toned colour of this.

- With these varying shades of blue you will be able to create depth within the irises. For the light shade of blue, set the brush’s mode to ‘color’ and then paint the irises in order to increase the overall pop of the eyes.

- Using the medium shade of blue, set the brush’s mode to ‘color dodge’ or ‘linear dodge’ and lower the opacity all the way down to around 20% or lower. By using this setting, we will be able to create an area of light within the iris. Eyes are very reflective, therefore you will always notice a lighter section within the iris. I suggest painting only a small fraction of the iris, preferably wherever the light is hitting it.

- Lastly, you can then use the darker shade of blue and set the brush’s mode to ‘multiply’. Select a smaller brush (a 1px brush, if possible) and then carefully darken the outer circle of the iris (the black ring which separates the iris from the sclera). If this appears too harsh, then you can blur the line by using the blur tool set at a very low capacity.
